I first heard this song at the Crystal Ballroom. It was being played by a band I can picture on stage but can't remember the name. I think it might have been the Sacred Cowboys but I could be wrong. I'm sure there were one or two of the Negatives in the band. Must have been 1980. God I can't remember.
I think I spent every weekend at the Ballroom. There were lots of nooks and crannies for the bands to play in. This was at the side where we used to collect our Strasbourg sandwiches. In those days pubs had to provide food/ this kept a lot of starving musos happy. On the ceiling were thousands of seven inch singles glued to the roof. we'd wander around the ballroom looking for fun. A few years later I came back to the ballroom for one night when it was a giant disco. We spent half the night wandering from room to room looking for fun.
Back to the song. Loved it and chased it down. I was a minor fan of Big Star. I knew the Chilton name from The Box Tops, a biggish American band. Loved some of the album. Thought some songs were crap. But the really good songs made me start searching for Big Star records. And here I found a real treasure trove.
